Humanities @ Baysgarth

Our intent is to provide every student with high quality teaching, allowing them to fulfil their full potential.

In Geography we ultimately want students to have a better understanding of the world that they live in, from a local to a global context and to give students an understanding of the changes taking place and the processes involved in these changes.

Our curriculum aims to:

  • Provide students with the means to think about the world in new ways.

  • Provide students with geographical knowledge that goes beyond their everyday knowledge / experiences and to expose them to ideas and places they would not otherwise encounter, thus giving students the ability to explain and understand the world.

  • Provide students with the knowledge to engage in current debates of significance, e.g. contemporary issues, challenges and changes.

  • Expose students to geographical enquiry – allowing students to deepen their conceptual understanding through reasoning, data interpretation, analysis, arguing their points, and evaluating information / practices.

  • Develop an understanding of our students’ place in the wider world.

“Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future.” Michael Palin

History is not just blindly accepting the world for what it says it is but always questioning it. We are not only building foundations for knowledge and skills but we also allow our students to have a broader understanding of the wider world and how it has developed and changed throughout time. Our curriculum is focused on educating and expanding our students' awareness of society’s diverse social, moral and spiritual dynamics which will subsequently enhance their cultural capital.

Our curriculum aims to:

  • Provide students with opportunities to explore a range of people, places and events across different time periods.

  • Expose students to key themes understanding how they fit into the past.

  • Encourage empathy and understanding for others.

  • Develop a sense of identity.

  • Develop an understanding of our students’ place in the wider world.

As well as delivering subject specific knowledge and skills that students would not otherwise have access to, we are developing transferable skills.

We are developing literacy and oracy skills to ensure that students are effective communicators.

We develop critical thinking skills teaching students how to analyse and interpret information and sources, and how to conduct balanced arguments when assessing, evaluating / discussing, thus developing a students ability to think holistically.
