National Poetry Day
Aspiring young writers inspire with their words...
To mark 'National Poetry Day', students had the opportunity to submit their own original poem around the theme 'counting'. There were many entries from students across all year groups, and today, staff faced the difficult challenge of choosing a winner. The calibre of the poems was exceptional, so much so that it was impossible to choose just one, so here are the two winners' creations:
Counting The Limited Time
I count the laughter count the years,
The tender weight of dropping tears.
In every beat in every sound.
A measurement of time can be found.
I try to grasp, the moment slips
The cruelty of deaths cold lips
I wish for more, I count the seconds
But the next time we meet is in the thousands.
So bring me back what I had before
You took her time and she needed more
The hands don’t move, still like water
I still have time, how will I spend it?
I wonder.

Still Counting
I can’t let go,
I know Christmas has already come,
And your birthday, and mine,
But part of me feels as if I'm still there,
So I sit, staring meaninglessly at the endless calendar,
Still waiting, still hoping,
Still counting.
Everyone is moving again,
Moving forward, away from the past,
But I'm still there,
Still here, still waiting for you to come back,
To stand outside the cold, empty house you left behind and to see you stood beside the door,
Gently smiling, and for you to embrace me in your warm, loving, open arms,
Like you always would.
Rivers of sorrow silently pour down my face,
Maybe someday we will be two souls meeting for the first time again,
And then we can share the laughter we never could in this lifetime,
Still waiting, still hoping,
Still counting.
